My great grandmother was also on board the Goodyear. Her name was Lillian Bassett the mother of "John" who's real name was Harry. She too drowned leaving a young daughter back in Michigan too grieve for her family for the rest of her days.

I just discovered this piece of my family history when my father told me his uncle who was an excellent swimmer died in the Goodyear accident. His name was William Pitt and he was from Midland. He would have been in his 20s at the time and was one of the crew members. Terrible tragedy!

This is also my family. My grandmother was Mrs. Thomas Henry Bassett, and her daughter was my aunt Catherine. This makes Fank and Thomas brothers, as Emma was my great grandmother. Also my mother was born on July 20th, two months after this shipwreck!. No one in my family ever mentioned this accident to me, but my grandparents moved to Indiana, and presumably did not work on the ships again.

I too am a great grand daughter of Lillian Bassett. She was the ships cook. My grandmother Edna Bassett was the orphaned daughter left behind in Michigan. Great Gran was holding Harry while in the water when they were hit by a hatch and killed. My mother, Barbara Kerby, Ednas daughter, recalled that her mother never got over the loss. It was a terrible tragedy that generations feel to this day. Someday I will visit the area where the ship sunk and lay flowers for my lost family members in their memory. May they Rest In Peace.
