TALE OF PIRACY ON LAKE HURON.
Toronto, May 27. - A daring case of piracy on Lake Huron, bordering on the dime novel brand, has just been solved by the arrest of Capt. A.W. Hopps by the provincial police and his subsequent confession. On the night of Sept. 4, 1904, the 34 foot steam yacht OPHIR, owned by Milton Pearse of Parry Sound, was boarded by two men from the steam tug PILOT. Through an ugly storm they struck out into the lake and were no more heard of. One of the men was recognized as Shipper Hopps. Some months later a yacht answering to the description of the OPHIR was seen at Erie, but nothing was heard of Hopps. Last week Hopps turned up at Moon River, in the Georgian Bay district, and was at once arrested. He admits that he took the craft, but claims he thought the other man was the owner.
