Oswego (Propeller), collision, 23 Jul 1844

The NILE returned to this city yesterday, having been run into by the propeller, OSWEGO, after entering Lake Erie near the Islands. The NILE was somewhat damaged in her wheel house and one wheel, and was towed back into port by the MISSOURI. She will probably leave again tonight.

COLLISION. - We learn from Capt. Titus, of the JULIA PALMER, arrived last evening from Detroit, that the NILE was run into by a propeller, supposed to be the NEW YORK, on Tuesday night last, and completely dismantled, one wheelhouse being entirely torn away, with the timber supporting that end of the shaft which dropped down to the deck, and rendered the engine useless. The propeller having done this damage through inexcusable carelessness or something worse, immediately made off, without stopping to ascertain the amount of the injury, or render any assistance.
      The JULIA PALMER was fortunately not far off when the collision took place, and with praiseworthy promptness went to the relief of the NILE, took her in tow and carried her into the Detroit River, whence she was taken to Detroit to be repaired. Capt. Titus was detained half a day rendering this service, which delayed his arrival here until five o'clock P.M.
      The NILE was on her way down, from Chicago to this port. The collision took place when she was off the mouth of the Detroit River, and about 25 miles from it. - Courier.

      The NILE returned this morning. Her larboard wheel-house exhibits the evidence of the collision with her antagonist, which turned out to be the propeller OSWEGO, of Oswego. From what we can learn, the propeller is more injured than the steamer. She struck the latter stem foremost sustaining considerable injury. On reaching Detroit it was found necessary to discharge cargo and repair, as the collision made her leak quite fast. A few hours joiner work will remedy the injuries sustained by the NILE.
