New Hampshire (Schooner), aground, 3 Nov 1877

Port Huron, Nov. 3. - The little barge HICKORY, of Sandusky, sunk off Leamington, Ont.., on Thursday night and drowned her engineer. She was loaded with cordwood. The tug MOCKING BIRD leaves here tonight with steam-pump and hawser to rescue the schooner JAMES R. BENSON, ashore on Middle Island. The schooner NEW DOMINION went ashore near Point Edward last night and was released this evening.

      Detroit, Nov. 3. - The heavy wind of the last three days, continued in a hurricane last night. Dispatches from Lakes Erie, Michigan and Ontario show that damage to shipping have been numerous and severe. Thursday night, the steam-barge YOUNG HICKORY sprung a leak and sunk off Bar Point, near the mouth of the Detroit River. The engineer, William McAlpin, was drowned. The rest of the crew were saved by the schooner PORTER. The schooners HELEN, NEW HAMPSHIRE, and STARLIGHT were beached near Leamington, Ont. The schooner JANE C. WOODRUFF went ashore last night on the reef near KIngston. The scow FLORA is beached near Grand Haven. The schooner CITY OF TAWAS was beached near St. Joseph last Monday night, and is a total loss. The schooner COLONEL HAYES, of Chicago, went ashore on that beach last night. The steam-barge SWALLOW is ashore near Port Stanley.

      The schooners W.J. SUFFEL, NEW HAMPSHIRE, STARLIGHT, and HELEN all went ashore near Leamington on Friday. Their position is reported easy, the bottom being sand, and their cargoes, it is understood, lumber. On Saturday the tug PARKER went to their assistance, and with the weather moderating, it is expected would succeed in pulling them off without much trouble. No steam pumps were taken by the PARKER, showing that nothing serious was wrong with the vessels.
