Advance (Scow), sunk by collision, 13 Jul 1871

COLLISION- SCOW SUNK. - The scow WILLIAM WELLHOUSE, which arrived at this port yesterday morning from Cleveland, reported a collision as taking place on Thursday morning on Lake Erie, between a scow, supposed to be the DOLPHIN, of Detroit, laden with coal, and a craft unknown. The scow went down with her cargo, and will prove a total loss. The topmasts are to be seen above the water. The captain of the WELLHOUSE is of the opinion that the crew saved themselves by the use of their yawl, and that they have reached Cleveland. Detroit Post, 15th.

      THE LOST VESSEL. - A more minute detail of the vessel lost in Lake Erie, as noticed in our last issue, and which reached us in rather an indefinate shape, has come to hand. The name of the vessel, it appears, was the scow ADVANCE, of Fairport, Ohio, and her cargo, 100 tons of coal for a firm in Detroit. The collision, which was with an unknown craft, took place on Monday night, she having sailed from Cleveland the night previous. The crew saved themselves by the small boat. The ADVANCE was owned by Gallucia & Barns, of Fairport, and was uninsured. - Detroit Post.
