Acadia (Barge), aground, 26 Apr 1897

Kingston, Ont., April 27. -- The tugs WALKER and BRONSON left here towing barges loaded with wheat for Montreal yesterday afternoon. They encountered a snow storm, and during the gale four of the barges ran ashore at Johnston's lighthouse. These barges have on board 100,000 bushels of wheat. The barge KINGHORN is sunk in 100 feet of water, another is half full and the others are leaking badly.

Kingston, Ont., April 30. - The M. T. Company's barge ACADIA, in tow of the tug ACTIVE, has arrived up from the vicinity of Alexandria Bay, where she has been stranded on the rocks. A steam pump worked steadily keeping her hold free of water. She will he docked for repairs. The sunken barge KINGHORN has been located. She lies at the bottom of the river almost opposite Rockport, and in 80 feet of water. Efforts will at once be made to raise and bring her to Kingston for repairs. The other barges in tow at the time of the accident have been taken on down to Montreal.

      THOSE ST. LAWRENCE DISASTERS.
      Of the barges, which last week struck the rocks near Alexandria Bay, St. Lawrence River, the ACADIA has been towed to Kingston, leaking badly, and minus nearly all of her corn cargo. The KINGHORN rests in 80 feet of water and an effort will soon be made to raise her. The two remaining barges were towed to Montreal after having been floated.
