Cleveland, Ohio, Nov. 24, 1818
MELANCHOLY SHIPWRECKS. -- The schooner INDEPENDENCE of Sandusky, John Brooks master and owner, John Chambers, seaman, cleared from the mouth of Black river, on Sunday the 14th inst. for Detroit, loaded with corn for John S. Reid, Esq.. who sent his son Cornelius Reid with Capt. Brooks and dispose of the corn, The vessel was capsized in a gale -- the cargo lost, and every soul on board drowned. The wreck drifted on shore on Monday the 16th inst. near the mouth of Black river, with her foresail and jib, her main mast had been carried away in the gale.
      Capt. H. Reid of the schr. LIBERTY, arrived from Buffalo on the 23rd inst. informs that on the 19th of the month off Grand river he discovered the wreck of a vessel, bottom upwards, they hailed her but received no answer.
      Schr. PAULINA, was driven on shore near the mouth of the Grand River, and bilged, her crew saved, but her cargo consisting of salt, lost.
      Schr. BOXER, laying in the mouth of Grand River, dismasted, bilged, and a complete wreck. Crew saved.
      Schr. WASP, dismasted and driven ashore at the mouth of Cummingham's Creek, bilged; her crew saved, but cargo lost.
      Schr. GEN. BROWN, was driven on shore near the mouth of Black River on Wednesday the 18th inst. her crew all safe, but the vessel considerably damaged.
