Anthony Wayne (Steamboat), fire, 24 May 1843
- Full Text
Detroit, May 25. -- The steamboat GENERAL WAYNE which came in yesterday, narrowly escaped destruction by fire on Wednesday night, while lying at the wharf at Sandusky. At about one o'clock the fire was discovered to issue from the upper part of the engine room, immediately under the gallows. It was extinguished without doing any very great damage. The passengers unite in saying that it was unquestionably the work of an incendiary. We have received a long card of the passengers exculpating the officers and crew from all centure. --- Daily Adv.

The stm. GEN. WAYNE came in at 12 M. with nearly 200 steerage and 4O cabin passengers. Whilst at the wharf, at Sandusky, at 1:00 this morning, the whole of her engine room was discovered in blaze, The fire was extinguished with great difficulty and the boat was saved, by the almost superhuman exertions of the officers and crew, who deserve gold metals for their cool and determined conduct - the damage is trifiling, The fire is supposed to have been the work of an incendiary, and several attempts at pick-pocketing were made during the confusion consequent to the alarm. - Detroit Com.
