Escanaba, Mich. April 29. -- The steamer PANAMA loading iron ore here is in serious trouble and may not be able to sail for some time. As the PANAMA was being loaded the vessel sprang a leak which was so serious that she came near sinking at the dock. Pumps were set to work to keep the vessel afloat. The steamer is drawing 19 feet aft and but 13 feet forward. The shippers refuse to let the boat sail with a cargo until some guarantee is given as to her seaworthiness. The PANAMA was formerly the JOHN CRAIG, which was wrecked in the Straits and rebuilt.
