SAND BOAT NIAGARA SINKS IN THE LAKE.
Crew Gets Off In Small Craft --- Vessel is saved.
The pump boat NIAGARA, owned by the Fox & Holloway Sand Company, struck and sank near Windmill Point this morning. There was no loss of life.
The NIAGARA was coming down from Point Abino to Buffalo, in tow of the tug WILLIAM P. DONNELLY, Capt. James W. Baker, loaded with sand. Near Windmill Point the NIAGARA struck a rock and stove a large hole in her bottom, forward. Filling rapidly she was towed in toward the dock and went down in shallow water. Several men on board had no difficulty in getting off in a small boat.
The tug MAJOR SYMONS and the pump boat PERRY were immediately sent to the aid of the sunken boat. Reports received at noon indicate that the sand will be pumped out of the NIAGARA this afternoon, the hole patched and the damaged vessel brought to this harbor for permanent repairs tonight. The value of the NIAGARA is said to be $15,000, uninsured. --
