TUGS RAISED FROM ERIE CANAL BOTTOM
Tonawanda, August 2.--The tugs ALBANY and STAR, which sank in the Erie canal at Wendelville, east of the Tonawandas, were raised yesterday. The ALBANY is owned by the Great Lakes Construction company and was being used on the barge canal work at Wendlevllle when it ran onto a pile and poked a hole in her bow at the water's edge. She began to fill immediately and her crew beached her before she went down. She was raised by the tug Petrel of Tonawanda and repairs were made without going into drydock . The STAR is owned by Hiram Davis of Middleport . She had just been purchased from Capt. Frank Mago of Tonawanda and was being taken to Middleport to be placed in the towing business when she got out of the channel and smashed her planking so badly that she sank. The tug was got into shallow water before going down. She was raised by the use of a derrick, placed on a float and taken to Middleport for drydock repairs, The canal boat DAVID TAYLOR, owned by Ira M. Ross of Tonawanda, sank at the same point a few days ago. She sprang a leak and was run ashore on the heel path side of the canal. She is still aground but out of the channel of boats.
