J. D. Beaupre (Schooner), collision, 21 Nov 1843
- Full Text
The steamer CHAUTAUQUE came in about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, bearing marks of having been roughly dealt with, both by the elements and by contact with some other craft. When off Van Buren harbor she was run into by the schooner J.D. BEAUPRE, which carried away a portion of her wheel house, engineer's room, wheelsman's room and store room, greatly to the astonishment of those occupying the same, though without injury to any of them. When within a short distance of the city - off Sturgeon Point - the sea stove in her forward gangway and broke over her decks with such force, as to one time to cause her to be in great danger of sinking.
