General H. E. Paine (Propeller), aground, 19 Nov 1879
- Full Text
Lately, I have been conducting research on the advent of steamboating on Pine Lake (Lake Charlevoix) and Little Traverse Bay, Michigan. A vessel that traded between Charlevoix and Grand Traverse Bay ports was the tug *General H. E. Paine* 10856, which connected with Pridgeon's "Sarnia Line" at Northport from Traverse City, Elk Rapids, and
Charlevoix, from 1869 until 1877, when she ran a Grand Haven-Manistee route. Imagine my surprise when, looking into this vessel's history, I discovered she was built in 1865 at East Boston by the famous Douglas McKay.
She apparently foundered off Grand Haven, Michigan, 19 November 1879.
