Alpha (Barge), sunk by collision, 1 Nov 1867

Description
Full Text

The Detroit Post says a collision attended by a display of bad seamanship, took place on the River St. Clair early Sunday morning. A tug having in tow three barges, was coasting down the St. Clair River at about 4 o'clock Sunday morning, when they were met by the scow brig St. JOSEPH from Toledo, sailing up with a fair wind, and were run into by the scow, sinking one -- the ALPHA, almost immediately, and damaging the other barges more or less. The St. JOSEPH also sunk. Those on board the barges testify they had their lights up and in good trim, and the night clear and moonlight. The tug which had them in tow was in the middle of the river, affording a vessel sailing up with a fair wind sufficient room on either hand to pass without the pretext for a collision.
