Rochester (Steamboat), aground, 1 Nov 1844

Disasters on the Lake . - The Schooner ESSEX of this port, owned by Doolittle Mills & Co. and the Captain, with a cargo of wheat from Sandusky, in attempting to beat out of the Niagara river on Wednesday night last, carried away her jib and main gaff, and went ashore at the mouth of the river. She has bilged, and will probably be lost with her cargo, except 1,000 bushels taken from her by lighters. The vessel is insured for $1,800 at the North Western office.
The steamer ROCHESTER went ashore at about 2 o'clock on Sunday morning 3 miles below this in attempting to make our Harbor in a fog on her trip up. The steamer TELEGRAPH took off her passengers and deck load, when she was got off without damage. The owners and officers of the ROCHESTER tender their thanks to Captain Gordon of the British steamer ADMIRAL for the good feelings manifested in promptly hastening to the assistance of the ROCHESTER.
The schooner GATES with 1,500 barrels of flour and 1,000 bushels of wheat from Youngstown taken from the ESSEX, entered our Harbor in the blow on Sunday night and anchored inside. Such was the violence of the gale that she dragged her anchors, and went ashore near the fort, where she now lies, having made considerable water.
