Capt. Ellis of the sch, MONTCALM, which arrived at Toledo on Monday evening, reported the loss of Fred Gilbert, mate, in the Detroit River, at Springwells, near Detroit on Sunday evening. Gilbert slipped and fell overboard while hoisting the yawl boat, striking his head upon the boat. He was never seen after falling in the water. He was 23 years old, lived in Jefferson County, this state, was a kind man, and a good sailor.
