Hercules (Dredge), scuttled, 1874

The tug SUMNER arrived here this morning about three o'clock with the steam dredge HERCULES and dump scows which A.E. Munson of Coburg sunk at Presque Isle last fall. The dredge was sold to Munson about two years ago by John King & Co. of this city. He failed to meet his payments and when the mortgage, which he gave in part payment, became due and was not paid King & Co. foreclosed an sent the tug CRUSADER from this port to bring the dredge here.
Munson had some friends here who notified him by telegraph of the mission of the tug and when she arrive at Presque Isle she found the dredge scuttled and fast on the bottom. It has cost King & Co. about $4,000 to raise the dredge, pay costs, and bring it here.
