Dangerous Nebish Rapids.
Vessels Grounded and the Steamer OREGON Cut Down to the Water's Edge.
Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Aug. 12. - The steam barge C. J. GILCHRIST grounded heavily yesterday on Blackstake side of Nebish rapids. She is out forward four feet and rests on large boulders. Her consort, the CROSTHWAITE, is riding at anchor above the rapids. The steamer OREGON, while pulling on the GILCHRIST was run into by the steamship ALBERTA. The OREGON has her starboard quarter, near the fantail cut down to the water's edge and is leaking badly. The ALBERTA struck heavily on the redstake side and seriously damaged her bottom. The accident was caused by the rapid current turning the OREGON broadside in the channel. A number of craft are awaiting passage through the Nebish Rapids.
