H. D. Coffinberry (Propeller), U95285, aground, 25 Aug 1892
- Full Text
Sand Beach, Aug. 26. -- The steamer aground here which was yesterday reported as unknown, turns out to be the H. D. COFFINBERRY, which shifted her boiler in the gale and headed for shore under sail. She grounded two miles south of Port Hope, on a stony bottom. It is feared her bottom is pounded out. Part of the crew came ashore in their own boat, and the life saving crew brought the balance ashore. She is loaded with soft ore. The hull is insured for $25,000. The steamer UGANDA, bound down, made an unsuccessful attempt to pick her up outside, but the sea was too heavy to do anything.
