Seabird (Scow), collision, 28 Oct 1878

Description
Full Text

Grand Haven, Mich., Oct. 29. -- The wind began blowing hard from the Southwest last evening, at about 7 o'clock, increasing to a respectable gale at about 9. The following is the result at this harbor: The schooners H. D. MOORE and PRESTO high and dry on the beach north of the piers, and the PERSIA south of the piers. The PRESTO swung against the north pier, and while in that position the scow SEABIRD, in attempting to enter, drifted into her, carrying away all her headgear and sails. The SEABIRD managed to get inside, but her foresail is not all in one piece. The PRESTO swung the wrong way and went on the beach, being damaged to the extent of $500. The vessels on the beach, aside from the PRESTO, have sustained no damage so far.
