Full Text

Detroit, Sept. 22. -- The steamer REPUBLIC ripped a hole 60 feet long in the gravel barge ATMOSPHERE at River Rouge Sunday morning and it was necessary to run the latter boat ashore to prevent sinking. The big sand loading device of the ATMOSPHERE toppled over a complete wreck. The REPUBLIC was making the dock in a fog. The REPUBLIC has some damaged plates forward. The ATMOSPHERE is a converted schooner 125 feet long and 25 feet beam. She has sailed the lakes for 25 years. The REPUBLIC is a 364 foot steel vessel of the M. A. Hanna fleet.
