TUG KATE WILLIAMS DAMAGED.
Racine, Wis., Oct. 2. -- The tug KATE WILLIAMS, owned by the lake Shore Stone Company of Milwaukee, suffered heavy damage in the harbor here this morning through being run into by the Barry Line steamer STATE OF MICHIGAN. The tug left Milwaukee yesterday afternoon for benton harbor, to tow two scows to the Company's quarry near Port Washington, but on account of the heavy wind and sea sought shelter here and occupied moorings opposite the Barry Line Dock. The STATE OF MICHIGAN arrived at 5 a. m. today. In winding as usual, Capt. Louis Sterling gave the go-ahead signal and the steamer crashed into the tug amidships, cutting through her side to a point about a foot below the waterline. Of the tug's crew of nine persons, all were asleep except Charles Hartzell, the watchman. he immediately secured a blanket, forced it into the break in the tug's side, and then aroused the sleeping men.
