20. -- The heaviest easterly gale since Jan. 1891 swept Lake Michigan last night and this morning. At noon it is abated. The scow LAURINA laden with hard wood dragged her anchor and went ashore near Jenau Park. The crew escaped to the shore by the breakwater. Buffalo Enquirer Thursday, April 20, 1893 . . . . . LAURINA, lumber laden, went ashore near Milwaukee Wednesday. The schooner KEWANEE went ashore at Racine Thursday. The three-masted schooner L.P. DANFORTH was driven ashore 4 miles north of Chicago Thursday. She was owned by J.C. Higgie and valued at $20,000. She will be a total loss. Port Huron Daily Times Friday, April 21, 1893 . . . . . SCHOONER CHRISTINE MICHELSON WRECKED. Wis., Nov. 7. -- In a letter to his wife, Captain Samuel Martin, master and owner of the schooner CHRISTINE MICHELSON, announced that his vessel stranded on October 30, fifteen miles below Escanaba and became a total wreck. The crew of five barely escaped. The MICHELSON was bound from Escanaba to Milwaukee with a cargo of 200,000 feet of lumber, most of which will be recovered. Capt. Martin and his crew are at last accounts engaged in recovering the outfit of the wrecked craft. Capt. Martin's experience on the lakes has been a disastrous one. He was mate of the schooner RAINBOW, when she went ashore in 1893, and in the last nine years he has lost the schooner PERSIA, scows LAURINA and SILVER LAKE and the schooner MICHELSON. He mortgaged his homestead to buy the last named vessel. The CHRISTINE MICHELSON was built at White Lake, Mich., in 1867, and had a gross measurement of 137 tons. Marine Record November 7, 1901 . . . . . Schooner LAURINA. Official U.S. No. 15875. Of 55.40 tons gross; 53.19 tons net. Built at Chicago, Ill., in 1872. Home port, Milwaukee, Wis. 73.0 x 18.5 x 5.1 Merchant Vessel List, U.S., 1891 was removed from the 1894 Merchant Vessel List.
