      Alpena, Mich. Nov. 13. -- The steamer PORTER CHAMBERLAIN is ashore in Georgian Bay. The tug JOHN OWEN has been dispatched to her assistance with steam pumps and other wrecking outfit.

      BURNED TO THE WATER'S EDGE.
      Detroit, Mich., Nov. 14. -- Word has been received here by Capt. James McLarty of the Smith Transportation Company that the steamer PORTER CHAMBERLAIN and consort H. J. WEBB are on the rocks at Dartch Island, Georgian Bay. The CHAMBERLAIN was built in 1874, and is valued at $10,000.
      Alpena, Mich., Nov. 14. -- The steamer PORTER CHAMBERLAIN and schooner H. J. WEBB which stranded on the reef in Georgian Bay some days ago, both burned to the water's edge last night. The fire began in the engine room of the CHAMBERLAIN and then spread to the WEBB. Both were insured against fire.

The steamer PORTER CHAMBERLAIN and barge H. J. WEBB, whose destruction by fire after stranding in Georgian Bay was announced yesterday, were both old vessels. The CHAMBERLAIN was built at Marine City and came out in 1874. She rated A 2 and had a gross measurement of 279 tons. The WEBB was built at Vermiliom, O., and came out in 1869. Her rating was A 2 also, and gross measurement 431 tons.

The PORTER CHAMBERLAIN and barge WEBB both burned while agriund Monday at Georgian Bay. The two boats were valued at $19,000.

      Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., November 20. -- The crews of the steamer PORTER CHAMBERLAIN and Consort WEBB, which were burned in Georgian Bay recently when ashore, passed through here today on their way home.

      Capt. A. Mills of the barge H, J. WEBB, which with the steamer PORTER CHAMBERLAIN was burned while aground near Dartch Island, Georgian Bay, thinks the fire was caused by sparks from a little wood-burning tug. The Smith Transportation Company, owner of the two vessels, loses about $7,500. The CHAMBERLAIN valued at $8,000 was insured for $4,500, and the WEBB, valued at $7,000 carried but $3,000 insurance.
