Gem (Schooner), U10201, aground, 1 Nov 1875
- Full Text
The Chicago Tribune, I2th. says:-- The owner of the schooner GEM, which went ashore a short distance north of the pier at St. Joseph, arrived here yesterday, and shipped one of Capt. Risley's II inch steam pumps by the propeller MESSENGER, to be placed on the wrecked vessel. The GEM was bound from Grand Haven for Racine, with a cargo of oak lumber, and missed the harbour Monday morning. Her crew were compelled to take refuge in the rigging, but even there the spray dashed over them, soaking them to the skin. The poor feliows were rescued from their perilous position, so benumb, that they could hardly stand. The deck of the vessel is two feet out of the water, and it is believed that she can be easily raised when the steam pumps are put aboard. All but 5,000 feet of her cargo of lumber have been taken off.
