ADIEU TO THE S. L. WATSON.
The Well-Known Old lake Schooner Founders Off Cape Cod.
The SAMUEL L. WATSON was built twenty six years ago at this port by the late Capt. J. M. Jones, registered 606 gross tons, and was 177 x 32 x 13 feet in dimensions. In her day she was one of the crack sailers of a great fleet of fine schooners in which the bulk of the lake freight was carried. Her original cost was about $50,000. She is the second total loss Gilchrist has sustained in two weeks, the other being the steamer JOHN B. LYON. For some years past he has carried no insurance on his vessel property. It has been figured that the loss on the LYON would just about ammount to what the insurance premiums on his boats for a year would total, so that the WATSON's loss comes right out of his pocket.
