Escanaba, September 22. -- The wrecker MONARCH came in this afternoon and Captain Barclay reports that the steamer BIELMAN was released from Fisherman's Shoal at noon today. Half of the coal cargo was lightered before the boat was pulled from the rocks. The wrecker FAVORITE will tow the BIELMAN to Milwaukee where the cargo will be unloaded and the ship docked for repairs.

According to a recent decision of the Court of Appeals, seamen are not entitled to extra pay when throwing overboard in order to lighten a cargo off a reef. This decision is the result of a suit brought against the steamer C. F. BIELMAN by James Gilbraith, John Welmer and William Bachelor. The Bielman, loaded with coal, went aground on Fisherman's Shoal, Lake Michigan, in 1900 and the men shoveled overboard for thirty-six hours in order to lighten the boat. In attempting to collect extra wages, the court held that they had been employed to run to Milwaukee and, as they did not lose a day's wages, they were no special salvors, but employees, and as such not entitled to extra pay. This decision has just been affirmed.
