WET 13,500 BUSHELS
PROPELLER TAMPA STRUCK A SHOAL JUST OUTSIDE MIDLAND, ONT.
A Toronto Dispatch dated yesterday says: Capt. Donnelly has returned to the city after superintending the pumping out of the steamer TAMPA, which struck a shoal just outside of Midland Harbor on her way from Chicago to Midland with 101,000 bushels of wheat. The steamer was taken to Milwaukee for repairs. Of the cargo,13,500 bushels were damaged, and this wheat was sold to L.H. Clark & Co., of Kingston.
The TAMPA is one of the largest class of wooden steamers building ten years ago. Her first owner was David Whitney, Jr., of this city, but she passed out of his hands when wrecked on Lake Superior two years ago, abandoned to the underwriters, released, rebuilt and sold to her present owner E.D. Carter and others of Chicago. She still rates A 1 Star and is valued at $85,000. If she was damaged badly enough to wet 13,500 bushels, her repair bill will not be a light one.

It is said that when the steamer TAMPA rode over the rocks outside of Midland, Ont., it seemed for a moment as if she would break in two. She passed over without stopping however, and after being made fast to the elevator it was found that four feet of water had accumulated in her hold. The strain upon the hull when she passed over the rocks broke two stringers under the rail on the port side and also cracked two deck planks in addition to starting the butts of others. The TAMPA brought with her from Midland to Milwaukee two steam pumps belonging to the Donnelly Wrecking Co., of Kingston, Ont., as a safeguard. They were in readiness for active operation should necessity for their use have arisen.
