Eugene (Scow), collision, 9 Oct 1868

A telegram from Muskegon informs us of a serious collision which occurred off that port on the 9th. between the scow MONITOR and the schooner WAYNE. The MONITOR ran into the WAYNE, and damaged her so badly that she immediately began to fill with water, and it became necessary to head her for shore,which she reached in a sinking condition. The scow was bound for the east shore port.

Two vessels are on the beach at Muskegan, one of them is the scow EUGENE, out high and dry, the other is the schooner WAYNE which was sunk by the scow MONITOR, the MONITOR lies inside at Muskegon with a large hole stove in her bow above high water mark, the collision occurred just outside the piers, while both vessels were endeavoring to reach the harbor.
