Early in the morning of the 17th the scow schooner C.G. MEISEL on her return trip from Erie loaded with stone from Kelly's Island was run into by the propeller FREE STATE near Malden and sunk. She was struck amidship on the port side and went down in about three minutes. The captain, Charles Jex of Port Huron lost his wife who was on board with him. The crew we understand was saved. The vessel is owned by Messrs. Ortenburger and A. Ludwig of Port Huron and Andrew Elmer of East Saginaw. She was built four years ago at a cost of $13,000 and was insured for $6,000. The FREE STATE proceeded on her way to Buffalo.
