In September 1936, after her machinery had been removed, the J V O'Brien was towed out to deep water in Thunder Bay, Lake Superior, possibly 12 to 15 miles off Port Arthur and was sunk at what was known as Sawyers Deep, the Deepest part of Thunder Bay. "set on fire and sunk".
