Metacomet (Schooner), U100555, collision, 25 May 1883

Escanaba, Mich., May 26. -- The schooner METROPOLIS cleared from Bark River yesterday at 4:30, with a full load of cedar ties, bound for Grand Haven. She had passed through the Door, and was on her regular course, when she collided with the steamer MONOHANSET, light, for escanaba [at 11:30]. After the steamer backed up her consort, the METACOMET, struck the METROPOLIS in the same place. The weather was very thick. The METACOMET was sounding her whistle and the schooner her fog-horn at the time of the collision, but they could not see lights over one hundred yards. The METROPOLIS is cut down about six or seven feet below plank sheer on her port bow. There is a hole about eight feet wide open nearly to the foremast. She is full of water. The master telegraphed to Chicago for a tug and steam pumps, and will try to take her to Chicago. The MONOHANSET and METACOMET are not injured.
