Algoma (Steamboat), damaged by ice, 1 May 1867
Full Text

The ALGOMA and WAUBUNO left this port for the Bruce Mines on the 2nd May and not being :
heard from for some time serious doubts for their safety were entertained however both steamers
eventually reached Collingwood.
We are indebted to Mr. Henry Kennedy for the following particulars respecting the
ALGOMA on which boat he was a passenger.
The boat went safely for a considerable distance but on arriving at Shebawananing she
encountered ice and came in contact with it with such force that a large hole was cut in her bow,
as soon as Captain McLean discovered that she was leaking he got overboard and by the means
of canvas stopped up the hole, and at once ordered her round for Little Current where she
remained for two days, A fresh start was made but on arriving within five miles of the Bruce
Mines pack ice was encountered and it was found the steamer Dubuque from Detroit which had
been in since the 24th of April with the hands short of provisions Captain McLean at once
furnished them with supplies after which the passengers walked on the ice to the Mines and sent
off hay on sleigh to the boats to feed the cattle on board, On the 8th of May the Propellor cut her
way through and she was immediately followed by the ALGOMA and WAUBUNO.
