First Canadian-Built Mine Sweeper Launched Collingwood, June 18 (CP).—The first of four minesweepers built in Canada for the Department of National Defense, was launched today in the Collingwood shipyards, with Mrs. W. D. Euler, wife of Canada's Trade Minister, christening the vessel Fundy. The minesweeper was 160 feet overall and capable of travelling 12% knots when fully loaded. A four-inch quick-firing gun was the chief armament. Spectators from all parts of the district attended the launching. The Department of National Defense was represented by Commodore Percy W. Nelles, Chief of the Naval Staff; Engineer Commander A. D. M. Curry, Director of Naval Engineering, and Commander E. Davy, Naval Overseer. Ottawa, June 18 £CP)V— Launch- ing at Collingwood, Ont., today of H.M.C.S. Fundy, first of the four minesweepers built under the 1937 program, will be followed shortly by the other three. Early next month H.M.C.S. Gaspe will leave the ways of the Morton Engineering Co.'s yard at Quebec. Two minesweepers are nearing completion on the Pacific Coast. H.M.C.S. Nootka, built by Yarrows Ltd., Vancouver, and H.M.C.S. Comox, by the Burrard Shipbuilding Co., North Vancouver, will be launched during August. The minesweepers take the name of Canadian bays, just as the destroyers are named after rivers. The two new destroyers purchased from the British Government, for service on the Pacific Coast, will reach Canada toward the end of July. -They will be named Ottawa and Restigouche. Norwegian Vessel Grounds ! In Bell Isle Strait Halifax', June 9 (CP).—The Federal Department of Transport announced today receipt of a message from the Norwegian freighter Lotos saying she was stranded on Ferolle Point, on the Newfoundland side of the Strait of Belle Isle. Extent of the damage was not known immediately, but the message said her captain believed the hull badly scraped, although the ship was not taking water. The Lotos is a 749-ton freighter registered at Bergen, Norway. She was launched in 1919. y ¦ COASTAL DEFENCE—Plowing through Georgian Bay, the Fundy exceeds expectations during trial runs. She was built in Collingwood as a minesweeper.
