US IS 1b> LAUNCH H.M.S. MINSTREL H.M.S. Minstrel was launched at Toronto shipyard at 9.30 a.m. with Miss Dolores Straus, of the shipyard's labor cost department, as her sponsor. Miss Straus is left-handed, the first southpaw who ever has launched a ship at Toronto, so far as records showed; and this is taken as one of the best of omens of good luck to the minesweeper. Half a dozen riggers hastened to bend true lovers' knots in the shorn segments of trigger stops to further enhance the good omens. A light fog also was accepted as the completion of the circle of luck charms. So Minstrel is regarded as the paragon gf^lucky Algerines. Machinery Lost, Intake Delayed Sarnia, Oct. 9 (Special).—Work on the new Lake Huron intake pipe of the Petrolia waterworks was set back at least two weeks when the big scow of the McNamara Construction Co., contractors in charge of the job, lost its machinery overboard early Sunday morning. Transport Ferry Montreal, Oct. 13.—For the first time since their building was ordered, the launching of a transport ferry—new type of ship to be used for amphibious operations — was made publicly here yesterday. It was the third of these ships launched here and the launching was "weeks ahead of schedule." Launched by i Mrs. Christopher Vokes, wife of! Major-Gen. Vokes, who heads a! Canadian division in Italy, the new, transport ferry was simply christened "202." ¦ Biggest warships built in Canada are the new transport ferries which the Dominion is turning out for the Royal Navy. Ottawa, Oct. 18.—Transport Dei partment officials said yesterday, that Transport Minister Michaud has ordered a preliminary inquiry into a collision last Thursday between a dynamite-laden freighter and a passenger boat at Vancouver, which resulted in the freighter sinking. The freighter, the Squid, was rammed by the Canadian Pacific Steamship Princess Joan, and the five-man crew was rescued. Capt. J. C.
