TANKER ARRIVES, ITS CAPTAIN GETS COVETED HONOUR Cycle Chief First Vessel „_ to Enter Harbou? Here. ^. as Season Opens Bearing a full cargo of fuel oil for the Steel Company of Canada, the McColl Frontenac tanker Cycle Chief jsteamed into the port of Hamilton early this afternoon to officially open the 1946 season of navigation. Following the tradition of years the captain, A. H. Foote, was presented with a silk "topper," symbolic of the first boat of the year, by Theo McCombs, vice-chairman of the Hamilton harbour commission. Due to ill-health, the chairman, C V. Langs, was unable to be present. Caotain Foote expressed his thanks and stated that the crossing from Toronto had been smooth and uneventful. He sailed out of the Toronto harbour shortly after 9 o'clock this morning. A. G. Gaul, harbour commissioner, officials of the oil company and press representatives cruised down the bay to the Burlington canal to me'et the incoming tanker. They sailed on the commission's cruiser, the Sea Hawk. When the boat had tied up at the Steel Company dock, Robert Gillies, general manager of the Steel Company of Canada, officially greeted Captain Foote. Early in the morning operating crews had manned the railway and bascule bridge; The order for crews to be on hand was sent to the department of public works, Toronto, several days ago by Ellis Cor-man, general manager of the commission. The city of Hamilton is more or less keeping Captain Foote in hats. Two years ago he arrived here with the same vessel on the same day and at the same hour, and at that time as this, he received the silk hat and was also handed, as to-day, a cheque with which to purchase a more modern version of what the well-dressed tanker captain wears these days. Bridges Ready The Canadian National Railway bridges at Burlington Beach and over the Welland canal were opened at the first of the week. The bridges east of Merritton and south of Thorold will be opened April 3. '..'.•>»•':¦ t. The Canadian Pacific Great Lakes Steamship lines will commence navigation out of Pert McNicoll the middle of next month, according to a report from the local C.P.R, freight office this morning. <M ' i ¦ * • & ...^BoS w °S v a C £ S u c S Si,^ bo gS»w „<<!
