The move eventually will free the ore bridges for the handling of substantially increased tonnages of iron ore in future years. Manitoulin is capable of carrying 30,000 tons of coal and unloading its holds at 4,200 tons per hour. BUT BECAUSE of the shutdowns of U.S. mines, the big motor vessel shipped a load of iron ore pellets at Taconiet Harbor in Minnesota for her maiden voyage to Hamilton. Stelco will keep Manitoulin busy hauling a big share of the 1,800,000 tons of coal required for its sbeelmaking operations from Lake Erie ports to Hilton Works' docks. Her turnaround time Monday is expected to be three times faster than is possible for vessels which have to be unloaded by overhead bridge cranes. It will be even faster than when she unloads coal cargoes.
