The 730- 1 foot-long self-unloader will be n used to carry coal for Ontario v Hydro when she enters service C later this year. Canadian Century is being built by Port Weller Dry Docks Ltd., a subsidiary of Upper Lakes. • NEWFOUNDLAND o The 380-foot-Iong shipbuild- tl ing shed at the $12-million tf shipyard and drydock under t( construction at Marystown, *' Nfld., has been completed. s Work on the shed began last w fall and the yard, jointly es- r tablished by the provincial and federal governments, will * be in operation by midsummer. The yard will be H equipped to build or service C fishing vessels of up to 1,000 c tons. A syncrolift marine elevator, similar to the one being built for the Royal Canadian , Navy at Halifax, will be a fea-ture of the yard. When com- ! pleted, the two elevators will be the largest of their kind in the world. They are less ex- f pensive and more convenient than conventional drydock elevators. ^Harbor opened A GODERICH — Navigation in Goderich Harbor opened Saturday with the arrival of the freighter Joseph Medill Patterson from Windsor. The vessel, under Capt. Fred Bingham of Midland, sailed yesterday morning for Cornwall with a load of salt. -- -„4 +Ua Shipper's Double >1h*%A First Manchester Liners Ltd. won a double-header today when two of their ships opened the foreign shipping season at both Hamilton and Toronto. The MV Manchester Exporter docked at Wellington Street at 5.05 this morning, while a sister ship, the MV Manchester Commerce tied up at Toronto at about the same time. CAPT. LEONARD Taylor of the Exporter was to be feted this afternoon at a reception attended by the Hamilton Harbor Commissioners, Hamilton Shipping Co. Ltd., the agents, and other dignitaries. The Exporter left Manchester March 23, carrying general cargo and three passengers destined for Hamilton. Capt. Taylor said two of the passengers were vacationers, the other an immigrant. The ship arrived here after stops at Baie Comeau, Port Alfred adn Montreal. The 15-year-old vessel will proceed to Buffalo, Toledo and Duluth, Minn., before returning to England.
