The rapids termed the Lachine Rapids are on the St. Lawrence River between the city of Montreal and the village of Lachine, nine miles from the former. The St. Lawrence steamers sometimes descend these Rapids [ ] to ascend them being a matter of impossibility. The Lachine Canal was cut in order to avoid the difficulty. It is a stupendous [ ] reflects much credit upon the enterprise of the inhabitants of Montreal and the surrounding districts. At the village [ ] residence of the Governor of Hudson's Bay Company, and the officers of this, the chief post of that ca[ ] at the orders from head-quarters in LOndon are sent to all the many posts throughout the vast[ ] near the end of April each year a body of trained voyageurs set out hence in large canoes called maitre canots with packages [ ] goods for the various posts in the wilderness. Two centuries ago the companions of the explorer Cartier on arriving here thought they had discovered a route to China, and expressed their joy in the exclamation "La Chine!" hence the name. At anchor is one of the commodious river boats for the superiority of which over those other nations America has long had the credit." - Date of Original
