Capt. Hazard, of the Empire State, arrived here Tuesday evening, and has gone to work vigorously, collecting men and materials, for an attempt to get his noble steamboat afloat again. He has fifteen double pumps in process of construction and advertises for one hundred men to work them. It is his intention to return with his help, on the Empire, and he has strong hopes of being able to get his boat off the Michigan shore and take her down to Buffalo for repairs.
The beach on which the Empire State lies is about three miles south of Sleeping Bear Point. There is no settlement on the mainland within 40 or 50 miles, and the Manitous are distant some 15 or 20 miles. - Sentinel & Gazette
