Western Transit Company New York Central & Hudson River R. R. Line of Screw Steamers Buffalo N.Y. August 7th, 1893 Mr. G. M. McMillan, Sec'y Detroit Dry Dock Co., Detroit, Mich., Dear Sir, Referring to the closing paragraphs of your letter of tho first inst,, and Mr. McVittie's of July 31st saying that you trust r.he "Mohawk" has come up to our expectations, I have delayed a reply until the ship had completed her trip. I can say now that the carrying capacity of the "Mohawk" exceeds our expectations and in that respect we are therefore fully satisfied and more* Or, her run from Chicago to Buffalo she had no weather to test her sea-going qualities, though I apprehend no trouble on that score. On leaving Chicago, she had about as close as we can estimate it, 100 tons of coal and the weight of her cargo was 3,004 tons. Her mean draft was 1G feet and 3/4 inch and on arrival at Buffalo, it was 15 feet, 9 and l/2 inches. The engines worked well, causing no delay and we expect from the results of that run down, ^hen her machinery has had a little use, her speed will be about the same as that of the "Hudson" and "Harlem", Which T believe is what you expected and which we are entirely satisfied with. While of course there is some little tinkering to do as is the case with all new Steamships, on the whole we have nothing to find fault with and I am convinced you have given us the best Steamship of her kind ever constructed. Both your Company and ours are to be congratulated upon this result. Yours truly, Note—The Mohawk is the Detroit Dry Dock Company's No. 115, was built in 1893, is 311 feet long, 42 feet beam, and 26 feet deep; gross tonnage 2357.64, net 1616.68; has engines, triple expansion, 23, 37 and 62 by 48 inches, steam being furnished by two boilers, 11 feet 8 inches by 18 feet long.
