As an example of the class of men now holding intermediate grade certificates, it not unfrequently occurs that, in their examination they are found to have served a regular apprenticeship, and have either put an engine into a boat, or have assisted to do it, and understand the lining of it. They can also calculate the strength of any part of a boiler, or its stays, the power of the engine or strength of any of its parts, and can make a working drawing of its parts. They are in fact masters, practically and theoretically,of the machines under their control.
