Vessels are divided into three Classes, viz : A, B and C, with the following grades to each Class, viz : A 1, A 1 â€"; A 2, A 2â€"; B 1 and B i-; B 2 ; C 1 and C 2. All vessels shall be classed solely on their merits, and in no case shall a vessel built of wood class A i longer than five years, unless strapped with iron. At any time, however, vessels are liable to be surveyed, and, if from any cause, such as stranding, collision, dry rot, or deficiencies in materials, &c, they are found unworthy to remain as classed, shall then be placed in the class and grade their condition warrants. If defects are promptly remedied to the satisfaction of the Inspectors, such vessels may be restored to their proper class. Vessels rebuilt or having received extensive repairs, shall have the benefit of such changes by their class and grade being continued or raised, as circumstances warrant ; but in no case shall a vessel be continued in the A 1 grade longer than five years, or be raised to that grade after that age. Vessels built of iron of proper thickness and strength, well fastened, and divided into three or more water-tight compartments, shall class A 1 ten years, subject always in other respects to the same exceptions and rules as govern the classification .of vessels built ot wood.
