Several Captains were in N.S. Stone’s chandlery store Saturday night talking about fast sailing, when Captain Geo. Tait, of the schooner Two Friends, made the bold assertion that he had run from Milwaukee to Chicago, 90 miles, in his schooner, which was flying light, in four hours. Captain Jim Hadden heard the statement, and turning to the Herald Representative asked how many miles an hour the vessel sailed. Upon being told that she skipped over the water at the rate of 15 miles an hour Captain Jim whispered "Your clock was stopped, Captain!"
