(Special to The Evening Press)Benton Harbor, June 20.-- Plowing through the waters of Lake Michigan as fast as steam will carry her is the salt barge Edward Buckley. The boat is running a race with death. Aboard the vessel, critically injured, is Chief Engineer Ernest Smith of Manistee. While the boat was discharging its cargo here Smith met with a serious accident, a barrel of salt falling on him. He feebly pleaded that he be taken home so he would be with his family in case he died. According to his prayer, the captain of the barge immediately cleared for Manistee, intending to make a record-breaking run to that port.
