Watertown, March 18. - While in this city Saturday night the matter of having the old naval station at Sackets Harbor, which has existed since the War of 1812, turned over to the Jefferson County Historical Society, was brought to the attention of Congressman Luther W. Mott of the 22nd congressional district, by A.R. Wilson of this city. Congressman Mott advised the society to make formal application to the government and promised to do everything in his power to have the property turned over to the society.

While the naval station was of importance a century ago, its usefulness ceased many years ago and all that now remains are the land, a house and some old cannon. The keeper of the station, however, had to raise and lower the flag every day, for which a small salary is paid. About 25 years ago the historical society was given the old battle ground at Sackets Harbor and is now anxious to acquire the old relics of the naval station. The house might be used as headquarters for the society. Should the government decide to relinquish the property, it would, according to law, have to be put up at public auction and sold to highest bidder.
