p.2 On Wednesday evening the steamboat Union arrived at Kingston Mills from Bytown, but owing to the water having fallen nearly two feet and exposed the sunken rock at this side of the coffer dam, she was unable to reach this port. The Captain describes the other parts of this navigation as perfectly clear, having found no difficulty in working through Cranberry marsh, a passage having been, by a curious contrivance of Captain Sherwood's, opened through it. Capt. S. coming down with a raft found his progress impeded by this floating obstacle and resolved to remove it by the singular experiment of procuring a quantity of heavy stones and covering the marsh the breadth of the raft; this not only succeeded in sinking a passage for the raft, but has left one sufficiently wide to admit of two steamboats passing abreast through this vacuum. The Union returned to Bytown yesterday, heavily freighted, and with a number of passengers. [Kingston Chronicle]
