- Description
- From 2003 to 2007, a team of volunteers at the Maritime Museum of the Great Lakes, Kingston, Ontario, renovated a 28-foot wooden boat that was once owned by Angus Mowat, father of author Farley Mowat. This article is based on a study of the history of the boat company to complete the restoration work. Archival research indicated that originally the boat was built as a sailing boat around 1910 before being converted into a motorized fishing boat, and later yacht. In these various incarnations the "Mowat Boat" incorporated important elements in the history of this type of Great Lakes boat backdating much of the first construction of it. These conceptual elements provide insights into other points of interest in Great Lakes maritime history.
