General Brady (Steamboat), sunk by ice, 4 Feb 1838
Full Text

Steamboat GEN. BRADY. -- The BRADY arrived at our Harbor on Friday last from Detroit, went to Toledo and returned on Saturday. On her way to Detroit on Saturday she met the anchor ice near Malden, flowing down the Detroit River in great quantities. She attempted to run to Malden, but her course was obstructed in such a manner that she was obliged to return and finally, after much difficulty, arrived near the mouth of Swan Creek. Her sides were muck worn by the rushing of the ice against her. The passengers made their escape by getting on to the ice, after they had broken in so near shore that it would bear them. And soon after their escape the boat sunk. The water where she lay when her sides became so worn as to admit the surrounding elements was so shoal that she may be recovered without difficulty; should she not, as is to be feared, go to pieces when the Lake shall be cleared by the winds. The passengers and crew had a rough, uncomfortable and dangerous excursion, but all landed in safety. --- Monroe Times. undated
