Royal Albert (Schooner), sunk, 10 Aug 1868
- Full Text
The schr. ROYAL ALBERT, Capt. Colney, left this port about 9:00 last evening, bound for Toledo with railroad iron. When about 10 miles off Little Sodus she filled with water and went down, the crew barely having time to escape in the boats. They succeeded in getting ashore and arrived here this morning.
The vessel cost Mr. Boland $10,000 and was insured for $7,000 and, of course, will prove a total loss. - Oswego Times.

VESSEL LOST. -- The following dispatch was received here on Saturday from Oswego- "The schooner ROYAL ALBERT, with 285 tons of railroad iron for Toledo, sprung a leak, on Friday night off Big Sodus, and sunk. Total loss, Crew all saved".
LATER
Schooner ROYAL ALBERT - This vessel, which sprung a leak off Big Sodus, Lake Ontario, on Friday night last, was built at Oakville, Canada, in 1858 by John Simpson, and measured 216 tons burden. She rated B I, was worth $10,000 and was the property of H. C. Holland of Oswego, who had an insurance upon her for $7,000. She was a good craft, considered perfectly safe and staunch, and there is no explanation of the strange affair, unless the iron may have been so loaded as to spread and burst the seams.
